Solar and wind technicians looking at maintenance maturity symptoms

Recognise Maintenance Maturity Symptoms in Wind and Solar

Wind and solar operators rarely struggle because maintenance isn’t happening.

In fact, most sites are doing more planned maintenance than ever, yet failures still surprise teams, downtime doesn’t fall, and predictability remains elusive. When that happens, the issue is rarely effort or resourcing.
It’s usually a maturity problem related to maintenance.

We see common symptoms in wind and solar operations that indicate time-based maintenance is no longer delivering the outcomes it should, and therefore, the maturity level of their operations is lagging behind.

Planned maintenance is increasing, but failures still arrive unexpectedly

Preventive maintenance schedules are in place.
PM compliance looks good. But critical failures still occur without warning.

This usually means that the maintenance frequency is no longer aligned with the actual asset degradation. Work is being completed, but it’s not targeting the failure modes that matter most.

At this stage, more PMs don’t improve predictability; they just increase workload.

Data exists, but it isn’t working together

Most wind and solar sites already collect the right information:

  • SCADA trends
  • Inspection results
  • OEM reports
  • Work order history

The problem is fragmentation.

When these datasets sit in different systems, patterns remain hidden. Teams rely on experience rather than evidence, and early warning signs get missed. This is a common point where organisations believe they are data-driven, but still can’t act early enough to prevent failure.

Asset knowledge sits with a few senior technicians

Experienced technicians are critical to day-to-day reliability.
But when asset behaviour is understood mainly through people rather than systems, risk increases.

Common symptoms include:

  • Inconsistent failure recognition between shifts
  • Root causes are known informally, but not retained
  • Increased exposure as the workforce ages or changes

In wind and solar, where access windows are limited, undocumented knowledge becomes a structural vulnerability.

Planned work increases, but downtime does not fall

This is one of the clearest indicators that time-based maintenance has plateaued.

If PM hours rise year after year, but:

  • Availability stays flat
  • Forced outages persist
  • Weather-driven revenue losses remain unchanged

Then additional PM effort is no longer translating into reliability gains. At this point, maintenance needs to shift from time-based activity to risk- and condition-based prioritisation.

Small defects accumulate, and predictability stalls

Minor issues aren’t escalated early. They recur, and they become normal.

Over time, these small defects compound into recurring failures. Predictability stalls, not because failures are unavoidable, but because early signals aren’t acted on consistently. This is often driven by misalignment between Operations and Maintenance, rather than technical capability.

What these symptoms indicate

None of these signs suggests poor maintenance practices. They indicate an organisation that has:

  • Moved beyond reactive maintenance
  • Established preventive programmes
  • But not yet achieved reliable failure predictability

This is a common transition point, often described as a Stage 3 maturity plateau, where effort increases, but outcomes stop improving.

What changes at higher maturity levels

Organisations that move beyond this plateau don’t start by doing more work.

They focus on:

  • Connecting operational and maintenance data
  • Standardising defect and failure capture
  • Prioritising work based on risk and consequence
  • Aligning Operations and Maintenance around predictability, not task volume

That shift is what allows uptime improvements to compound rather than plateau.

If these symptoms sound familiar, it doesn’t mean your maintenance programme is failing… but it does mean your operation has outgrown time-based maintenance.
